Disability Insurance

Short- and long-term disability are offered to eligible BMC employees.

BMC’s sick time and disability programs work together to help pay your household expenses if you become disabled and cannot work. BMC pays 100% of the cost of this coverage, and enrollment is automatic.

Short-term Disability

Short-term disability insurance from Aflac offers protection for your most precious financial resource – your income. This plan can help with replacing lost wages so that you can focus on getting better and returning to work, instead of worrying about your expenses. Protecting your income with Aflac is a great way to help provide financial security for you and your loved ones. All employee are eligible for Short-term Disability coverage provided by BMC at no cost to you.

The chart shown below illustrates your benefits under our sick time and disability programs.

You must apply and be approved for Short-Term Disability (STD) benefits before or immediately after you are absent for illness. You can even start your claim in advance of your estimated leave date if you are scheduled for surgery or childbirth.

Your STD benefits will be paid to you directly from Aflac, BMC’s administrator and payment agent for STD. All statutory withholdings will be deducted, and benefits may be offset by any statutory sickness or disability benefits payable to you. During your illness absence, you will be billed directly for your portion of benefits contributions by BMC’s benefits administrator, Alight.

You can apply for STD benefits online at https://mygrouplifedisability.aflac.com/personal/s/login or by calling 1-800‐206-8826. Aflac is also our FMLA administrator, so you can also file your FMLA claim (if you are eligible) at the same time you apply for your disability benefits. For more information, please see the US STD policy page on my-bmc.com.

Long-term Disability

Expenses don’t stop when you are unable to work due to an illness or injury, and they can quickly pile up. This is especially true if you are unable to work for a longer period of time. Long-term disability insurance from Aflac can help protect your income while you recover.

If you are unable to work for longer than 25 weeks, BMC provides a Long-term Disability benefit that can help protect 60% of your monthly salary, (base salary, bonus and commission)** up to $15,000. This coverage is provided at no cost to you.

In order to be approved for Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefits, you must be permanently and totally disabled and unable to perform your own occupation for the first two years of disability. After two years, the definition of disability changes and you must be unable to hold any job that is reasonably appropriate given your education level, training, or experience. LTD benefits continue until you are no longer disabled, the date you turn 65, or until your death. If you are approved for LTD benefits, you will no longer be covered under the BMC benefit plans; however you will be eligible for COBRA continuation benefits for medical, dental, vision and health care FSA coverage.

Optional Supplemental Long-term Disability

You can purchase supplemental coverage of an additional 15% of total pay (base salary, bonus and commission), resulting in a combined benefit of 75% of total pay (base salary, bonus and commission) up to a maximum of $15,000*. You pay the cost of supplemental LTD through after-tax payroll deductions. Evidence of Insurability is not required to purchase this coverage. Due to the monthly benefit maximum of $15,000 for both basic and supplemental LTD, there may be no change in your gross LTD coverage amount if you select the supplemental option. However, your net monthly benefit may be greater with the supplemental LTD option because you will be paying for a portion of the total benefit with after-tax dollars.

The overall maximum benefit—a basic and supplemental insurance combined maximum—payable under this plan is $15,000 per month. If you live in California, New York, New Jersey or Hawaii, you may be eligible for state disability benefits.

If you have questions about Supplemental LTD or need more information, take a look at the plan documents on MyBMC Rewards website and click on the Plan Documents tile.

*Disability benefits will be offset by Social Security, Workers’ Compensation and any other statutory benefits available to you.

Machine Readable Files

The Departments of the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services (the Departments) have issued the Transparency in Coverage final rules (85 FR 72158) on November 12, 2020. The final rules require non-grandfathered group health plans and health insurance issuers in the individual and group markets (plans and issuers) to disclose certain pricing information. Under the final rules a plan or issuer must disclose in-network negotiated rates and billed and out-of-network allowed through machine-readable files posted on an internet website. Plans and issuers are required to make these files public for plan policy years beginning in 2022. This material is for information only. Health information programs provide general health information and are not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a physician or other health care professional.
